Using password protection or a user login has several benefits. Your organization can set up sections of a website to only allow certain users (employees for example) to a given section with sensitive information. Or you could require that a user login before gaining access to all of your content.
Requiring registration is a simple way to find out exactly who is using your site, and this will also give you contact information for users that have registered; excellent for creating email or newsletter mailing lists.
